Norwood Pennewell (Rehearsal Director/Assistant to Mr. Fagan), who joined Garth Fagan Dance in 1978, is the quintessential Garth Fagan dancer and is Fagan's assistant and muse. Pennewell is a recipient of a 1988 New York Performance Award "Bessie" and has had several major works created for him, including Passion Distanced, Time After Before Place, and Moth Dreams, among others. Pennewell's dancing has been seen on "Great Performances," "The Tonight Show" and in Duke Ellington's Queenie Pie. In 1994 he was invited to perform in the "66th Annual Academy Awards" broadcast. Pennewell teaches both company and master classes for Garth Fagan Dance. He recently assisted Mr. Fagan during his work on Broadway's The Lion King and the NYC Ballet 50th anniversary Ellington project.

 

Steve Humphrey is an original member of Garth Fagan Dance. Over the past 37 years Fagan, Humphrey's only teacher, has created major roles for him, including Oatka Trail, which won Humphrey one of the first New York Performance Awards "Bessie" in 1984. Humphrey, a native of Ann Arbor, has been featured on "Great Performances" and in Duke Ellington's Queenie Pie at the Kennedy Center.

 

Bill Ferguson (Artistic/Administrative Liaison) joined Garth Fagan Dance in 1989. A native of Honolulu, Hawaii, he served in the United States Air Force and graduated with honors from University of Missouri-Kansas City. Ferguson teaches Fagan Technique to children at Garth Fagan Dance School.

 

Nicolette Depass of Jamaica, West Indies, joined the company in 1994. She was raised in Queens, New York and graduated cum laude from SUNY Brockport with a Bachelor of Science degree in Dance and Communications. A former scholarship student of the Garth Fagan Dance School, she now teaches Fagan Technique to children at the school.

 

Guy Thorne is a graduate of the Edna Manley College for the Visual and Performing Arts, Kingston, Jamaica. Originally from Guyana, Mr. Thorne continued his studies as a scholarship student of the Dance Theatre of Harlem and started with Garth Fagan Dance in 2002.

 

Annique S. Roberts is a native of Atlanta, Georgia. During her last year at Howard University while finishing her BFA in dance graduating magna cum laude, Ms. Roberts interned with Garth Fagan Dance, subsequently joining in April 2004. She has performed works by Ronald K. Brown, Kevin Lega Jeff, Christopher Huggins, and Eleo Pomare. Annique would like to thank her mother and father for unconditional love and support.

 

Demetrius Blocker (Apprentice) a native Floridian, studied as a scholarship recipient and graduated with honors from the New World School of the Arts in Miami, Florida. While studying there he had the privilege of performing works by Donald McKayle, Robert Battle, among others.Demetrius arrived at Garth Fagan Dance in June 2005.





Khama Phillips, born in Barbados, W.I., was previously a dancer with L'acadco. A Clive Thompson Scholarship recipient and graduate of Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, Khama has performed as an apprentice with The National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica and was a member of the Jamaican Ashe Caribbean Performing Arts Ensemble. He began his journey with Garth Fagan Dance in September 2006.



Kaori Otani has extensively studied dance and rhythmic gymnastics in her native Japan, and began her modern dance quest after moving to the U.S. and transferring into Hunter College in New York City. As a 2005 college graduate, Kaori continues her journey to pursue a career in dance with Garth Fagan Dance as of November 2005.

 

 

Lynet Rochelle was born in Los Angeles, CA where she began her training with Lula Washington Dance Theatre. She continued her formal training at Howard University as a dance major. Under the recommendation of Dr. Sherill Berryman-Johnson, Ms. Rochelle came into contact with Garth Fagan Dance through an internship in 2006, which she continues as she completes her senior year.

 

Kelly Benjamin (Intern) hails from Washington, D.C. At the Rochester Institute of Technology she majored in environmental science, became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc and performed with the RIT/NTID Dance Company. During her college years she also studied as a scholarship student with Garth Fagan Dance. She thanks her mother and Thomas Warfield for their support.
